MATERIAL GIRL*Z 2022
brought to you by: Paula Oberndorfer (she/they), Esther Stern (she/they)
this calendar is inspired by the art scene itself and wants to show artists in select spaces that inspire their artistic production.
participants were asked to stage themselves in a scene or with materials that are important for their creative process. Initially we
planned to photograph in work spaces, but it turns out that some other places feed inspiration just as much. places such as a sauna,
the bathtub, forest and beds came to mind equally.
material lust is a term we use to describe the fetish-like relationships with objects or materials, or a lust or fascination of unex-
plainable nature, that artists tend to have or develop.
the calendar is a time based medium, it is a fleeting object, that if you do decide to keep after its expiry date invokes a sense of
displacement or wrongness in being displayed (after its inherent expiry date). the medium is associated with a domestic environ-
ment, usually depicting societally idealised bodies with little room for “imperfections” which are edited out.
it is also a study on gaze, because of the sexual, cheesy and ironic nature that is associated with the medium. a sexy calendar one
might give as a present, a joke, or something that hangs in predominately male dominated spaces like workshops or garages.
this calendar is using the artist personality as a model, because the art world itself presents a paradox on exposure, raising the
question, what one sells first? the persona, the work, the body, the lifestyle or artwork itself?
